investing to independence

Independence is a concept that resonates with us in how we think, work, and live. It is something that everyone is trying to attain at some level. Independence is something that allows you to live the life that you want to live, gives you the freedom to make the decisions you want to make, pursue your passion, or spend your time how you see fit. Independence can mean different things at different stages in your life, it is something we strive for even from childhood and it is a place that we are all trying to get to.

We believe investing is one of the most reliable ways to facilitate someone to reach a state of independence over the long-term. It takes time, patience, and maybe even a bit of luck, but with at least two of those ingredients, we think most can get there.

That is why Peter Hodson and I are excited to officially announce the formation of i2i Capital Management.

It has been a long journey to get here and we thank all of our service partners/providers and most importantly our LPs who have, and continue to, provide us with their trust and support to help them get to their personal state of independence.

Going forward, we continue to remain laser-focused on the opportunities we are seeing in the US Small and Mid-Cap universe, a space that trades at a notable discount to its large-cap peers while often times having stronger balance sheets and growth profiles compared to those same large-caps. Meanwhile, Canadian investors continue to have some of the highest levels of home bias globally which can have some justification from a tax perspective but also is full of opportunity costs, particularly when it results in lower exposures to US markets which are home to some of the strongest, most competitive, and diverse companies in the world. Not to mention that the US Dollar acts as a natural hedge for Canadian investors as it is typically viewed as a safe haven asset in a bad market.

The future for i2i Capital Management will be focused on being true to our guiding principles:

·      Be Different

·      Be Humble

·      Be Independent

·      Be Forward Thinking

These apply operationally and in our investment process. Over time we hope to provide offerings and services that are different from the standard ones that are out there currently and focus on areas that are underserved or overlooked, much like the US SMID-Cap market from a Canadian perspective. We are excited with what the future holds and look forward to sharing more in the coming months, years, and more.
